“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you
Shelter from the storm.”
— Bob Dylan, “Shelter from the Storm”

If I only trusted her.
There would be no storms,
anxiety would not rule my thoughts,
and the dunes would keep the ocean
from flooding my home.

I’d let the poetry run through me
as I gaze upon the pyramids,
feeling the spirits of the pharaohs,
allowing their words to flow
without effort or strain.

I would hear my muse unimpeded
from a raspy Dylan song;
the mythological Goddess, Isis,
calling me to take her hand
and leading the way.

I would finally climb to the top
of the mountain,
find the path of certainty,
out of the winding maze,
escaping through a tiny door.

My Goddess-mother would lead me
to the sunlight of freedom.
The only direction
where dreams could last
and never waver.
