I See a Feral Cat's Joy

Through my window screen

Through my window screen,
I see a white cat who slowly creeps
onto my deck, finding peace
on our teak furniture.

The crows' caw
atop the tall trees
on a sunny morning,
while I drink black coffee
and read the newspaper
in the kitchen.

All is calm on Sunday
at my suburban home,
as the white cat
gently closes his eyes
in comfort's reprieve,
surrounded by flower pots,
red blooming roses,
and a coiled garden hose.

A feral cat's joy
is my salvation,
like the pleasing sound
of a church bell
as he discovered my home,
and a warm spot to rest,
inhaling the misty fragrance
of a eucalyptus morning.
