On Fairness

Not just a concept in our imagination

Most things in life aren’t fair —
but I keep trying to make it right,
regardless of the circumstances
because I don’t want to be watching
the homeless people
living on the streets anymore,
or the immigrants transported
from border to border.

I know I’m foolish,
but I believe things can change,
because the turtle outran the hare,
and the privileged one day
won’t be so entitled,
and everyone will get a quality education
like the kids in private schools.

If we only added compassion
into the human equation —
love begets love.
We can all share
the same dreams
and aspirations
if we try harder,
push the envelope a little further.

Make fairness a reality
and not an abstraction,
regardless of what the VIPs say,
or those invested
in keeping us down.
