The Road Behind

Is the path I’ve taken

I like to see what’s behind me,
where I’ve been,
what highways I’ve crossed,
and skies my mind has traversed

I want to remember the path I’ve taken,
the one I’ve chosen to ride,
where the morning greeted me
before the night had fallen hard

I like to point to the lone star,
I’ve wished and prayed upon,
to balance the ledger of the past,
check my gains against the losses incurred

I want to know my troubles and concerns,
understand the bridges I’ve burned,
the steep mountains climbed,
and the turbulent seas I’ve swum

Because, in the end, the road behind
is just as valuable as the one ahead.
