And the decline of common sense

A Shakespearean image — Othello.

People who believe in fools
become mirror images of them.
They listen to their words like gospel
instead of thinking for themselves
and using their better judgment.

Calling people idiots may seem harsh,
but many lack critical thinking.
They worship the soothsayers and the quacks.
The distorted leading the distorted,
the conspiracy of hate over love.

It is a sick mentality America clings to —
an infection far worse than coronavirus.
It’s something that education can’t fix.
There is no magic pill to take
or special formula in a drink.

A nation that ignores the obvious,
who believes in political charlatans,
who embrace the thinking of the ignorant
and, like Shakespeare’s Othello —
soon become victims of their demise.
